Intervention Study Registry - NKO offers new service
During the spring of 2006 NKO initiated the Intervention Study Registry (NKOISR). The background is ICMJE’s (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) requirement that a study should be registered before publication. Most medical journals comply with the ICMJE policy. The aim of NKOISR is to facilitate the process of clinical trial registrations and ensure compliance with the recommendations of ICMJE.

NKO Board committee meeting

The Board Committee of NKO includes representatives from the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, the National Board of Health and Welfare, the Swedish Orthopaedic Association, associated registers and the operational group of NKO. The Board Committee meets twice a year and July 4 they had a meeting in Lund.

Among others NKO presented an ongoing project called NKO Intervention Study Register (NKOISR). The ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) believes that it is important to foster a comprehensive, publicly available database of clinical trials. Member journals of ICMJE require, as a condition of consideration for publication in their journals, registration in a public trials registry. NKOISR will administrate a registry that meets the ICMJE criteria. More information at

Theme: Orthopaedic treatment

For health care to be comparable nationwide, a consensus in the choice of treatment for each disorder is required. However, since significant variation in the frequency of elective surgical and non-surgical treatments can be seen between both clinics and different geographical areas, this does not seem to be the case. In a series of articles, published in Läkartidningen (no. 0719), NKO and the orthopaedic profession presents evidence based guidelines for hip and knee joint osteoarthritis, disc herniation, spinal stenosis, back pain, meniscus lesions, cruciate ligament injuries and also for shoulder and foot disorders. The indication project is part of a national project initiated by the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions (SALAR). Summary NKO reports of the medical indications for orthopedic procedures made during 2005 and 2006 are available here.
